Lot Essay

The armorials are those of John, 4th Earl of Darnley (1767-1831) who unsuccessfully claimed the Dukedom of Lennox. Described in Sketches of Irish Political Character (1799) as "an amiable temper and disposition" he married Elizabeth, daughter of the Rt. Hon. William Brownlow, of Lurgan, Co. Armagh. An extensive collection of his silver, with numerous pieces bearing the arms of the 3rd and 4th Earls of Darnley, sold at Christie's, London, July 8, 1931, lots 1-74.
