Lot Essay

This and the following lot, which is painted on canvas, were for long considered pendants. Such still lifes are extremely rare within Horemans' oeuvre, which primarily consisted of genre scenes; another example, also signed and dated 1773, was sold, Sotheby's, London, 14 December 2000, lot 23 (£48,800). They are not dissimilar stylistically, and may be a reaction, to the still lifes of Jan Josef's elder brother, Pieter Jacob Horemans: see, for example, the pair of still lifes with figures by the latter of 1756 offered for sale, Neumeister, 26 June 2002, lot 637.
