Lot Essay

The technique used by the artist in this panel with its light, almost sketchy brushwork and treatment of white highlights, recalls that employed in small-scale works by Robert such as the Rocky landscape with figures (12.1 x 13.3 cm.) offered for sale at Sotheby's, London 11 December 1996, lot 230, and the slightly larger pair of canvasses: La Portique and La Pièce d'Eau, sold at Christie's, London, 5 July 1996, lot 77 (£63,000).
