Lot Essay

James Duff, 5th Earl of Fife, 1814-97, married Lady Agnes Hay, daughter of the Earl of Errol. Their son, who married Princess Louise and became the 1st Duke of Fife, was shipwrecked in the Mediterranean in 1911 and, although rescued, subsequently died of pneumonia, having lent his dressing-gown to a fellow-passenger.
The second motto mentioned is recorded for the Lumley and Williamson families
