L J HARVEY: A WHITE CERAMIC BUST OF A WOMAN
Signed and dated 1945 and entitled 'PEACE'
Lewis Jarvis Harvey (1871-1949) Emigrating to Australia from the UK as a child, Harvey studied at the Brisbane Technical College as well as wood-carving with Madley and Vickers. In 1937 he established the L J Harvey School of Applied Art and was acknowledged by many, including Daphne Mayo, Douglas Annand and Lloyd Rees as an important influence on art and craft in Queensland. He also experimented with local clays and started Queensland's first Art Pottery of which this bust is likely to be a product
