Lot Essay

The composition is taken from the main part of the famous Palace Kitchen of 1646 in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, that had been acquired by Catherine the Great as a part of the Walpole collection in 1779. The subject matter, which remains obscure to scholars, is generally believed to represent, at least in part, a depiction of the Four Elements.
