Lot Essay

Although relating in subject-matter to Lion qui vient de s'élancer sur un sanglier (see Poletti & Richarme, 2000, no. CS95, p. 437), one of the four combat groups from the Orléans surtout de table, Lion dévorant un sanglier is a much later work, not offered until Barye's final catalogue of 1874-5. Poletti and Richarme estimate lifetime casts of the model to number less than twenty, a far larger posthumous edition being offered by Brame.
