Lot Essay

Previously sold at Sotheby's London, 8 June 1982, lot 323.

The combination of lingzhi and wannianqing, a sturdy evergreen with clusters of red berries, provides the rebus wannian ruyi, 'May your wishes come true for the next ten thousand years'. The pair to the present bowl, with its interior carved in mirror-image, was sold in these Rooms, 28 October 2002, lot 636.
