Lot Essay

This design originates from the Chenghua prototype, such as the example with chrysanthemums and butterflies, illustrated in Chogoku Toji Zenshu, vol. 21, pl. 1.

Compare the present lot with a Qianlong-marked pair of jars in the Tianjin Art Museum, included in the exhibition of Chinese Treasures of 5000 Years, Japan, 1985, and illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 46; and a single jar and cover in the National Palace Museum, Taibei, in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ch'ing Dynasty Porcelain, pl. 24.
