A Berlin (K.P.M.) gilt-metal-mounted two-handled green-ground presentation vase and stand
Circa 1859, blue sceptre and Pfennig-marks to foot and stand, the stand incised 20F. in two places, the foot with luster No.II
The handles formed with sections of berried leaves enriched in burnished and matt gilding, the richly gilt neck reserved with a band of overlapping oak leaves, the green ground oviform body painted with topographical views of the Lange Brücke, the statue of the Great Elector before the Königliches Schloss, Berlin, the reverse with a view of the Schloss at Charlottenburg from the garden, within rectangular cartouches, with matt and burnished gilt gadrooned sections reserved with foliage, the lower part gilt to imitate gadrooning, the waisted stem on a square section foot, the stepped square section stand inscribed and dated Herrn Johann Lucas Schönlein die Ärzte Berlin's im März 1859 within a rectangular cartouche, gilt with a vermicular pattern between stylised anthemion

Lot Essay

The above lot appears to be a presentation piece to the physician, Johann Lucas Schoenlein. The son of a Bamberg rope maker, he achieved noteriety in the medical profession as a gifted clinician. He was recognised for detailed observations and diagnostic techniques in a variety of fields.
