Lot Essay

The motif of scattered cypress trees flanked by curving floral forms, ultimately of Mughal inspiration, is seen in a group of small silk carpets commissioned for the mausoleum of Shah 'Abbas II at Qum in 1671 and now in the National Museum, Tehran (Pope, Arthur Upham: A Survey of Persian Art, Oxford, 1938, pl.1258). Both this and the next lot show how this motif was picked up and adapted in the north west of the country and beyond.
