Lot Essay

An apparently identical wine-cooler on stand, possibly the pair to this, was sold in these Rooms, 11 November 1999, lot 185 (£29,900), from the collection formed by Geoffrey Monro.
One such cistern, filled with bottles and glasses, features in Zoffany's 1781 portrait of William Ferguson entertaining friends at Raith, Scotland (R. Edwards, Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1977, p. 640, fig. 7)
