An assorted lot of imari and famille rose porcelain and a Japanese Arita salt
Late 17th and 18th Century
Comprising a pair of lobed dishes, painted in underglaze bue, iron-red and gilt with flowering peony issuing from rockwork surrounded by variously shaped flower panels, 23.8 cm. diam.; two oval dishes, painted in underglaze blue, iron-red and gilt with a butterfly hovering above flowering peony, enriched with flower sprays, 25.5 cm. wide; and an assorted lot of three famille rose cups and saucers; a U-shaped batavian ware bowl and cover, an imari dish and spoon-tray; a blue and white tea-caddy; and a Japanese Arita tripod salt, the concave well supported on a domed base, circa 1700, 7.3 cm. high, rim frittings and a crack (14)

For a similar example of the Japanese Arita salt, see an example in the Victoria and Albert Collection, Porcelain for Palaces, no. 202, Oriental Ceramic Society, 1990. It has been claimed by T. Völker, Porcelain and the Dutch East India Company, Leiden, 1954, p. 156 that the first Japanese salt cellars were exported in 1669.
