Lot Essay

Following the immediate succes in Europe of Japanese Imari porcelain exported to the VOC via Deshima from 1682 onwards, Chinese kilns soon followed their example and developed their own Imari style. However examples such as the above lot, where the Japanese design and colour scheme were closely followed are rare.
For an identical Chinese bowl see 'Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam', C.J.A Jörg and J. van Campen, p. 202, plate 225.
A Japanese late 17th Century prototype, smaller in size and with a different central decoration, was sold at Christie's London, 21 & 22 March 1990, lot 71.
