Lot Essay

This work bears a marked similarity to Stoke's painting The Baptism circa 1950, which is in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. Both paintings have figurative groupings of three semi-nudes and share a dramatic palette. The rock formations that appear in the background of both works are based on a sketch that Stokes completed during a family excursion to the You Yang ranges in Victoria.
