Lot Essay

Shiraz Cross is from Ball's Persian series, which was begun in 1966. In the catalogue essay which accompanied the Newcastle City Art Gallery's survey show of Ball's work in 1975, Janine Burke commented on the Persian series in the following extract:

"This new sensuousness of line and colour which characterizes the Persians is reinforced, not limited, by the cripsness of the design. The inspiration for this series came from the artist's own knowledge of and interest in Persian architecture. It follows that a style based on the ideals of Persian architecture would be one based on colour, line and proportion." (J Burke, "The Paintings of Sydney Ball", Sydney Ball Survey 1965 - 1975, 1975, unpaginated)

Herat Cross, a work that was exhibited with Shiraz Cross in the 1969 Melbourne exhibition of Ball's work, is now in the collection of the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
