Lot Essay

The palm trees encountered in Egypt must have held some fascination for Girault de Prangey as he made several small format daguerreotype studies near Alexandria, Aswan and Karnak. He appears to have made at least six near Alexandria, the majority of which are horizontally framed images showing more distant groupings of trees than here. In this example he concentrates on the arresting form of a single large palm, heavily laden with dates.
