Lot Essay

A strong detail, in which the sunlight reveals the dramatic sweep of the arch and picks out the finely carved design of the window, the capital and the various friezes. This is likely to be the daguerreotype used as the basis for the detail shown in the centre of the plate from Monuments Arabes d'Egypte, de Syrie at d'Asie Mineure illustrated on p.49.
