Lot Essay

Another unusual study in which the architectural remains are ignored in favour of a view which reveals the topography of the site, with a seemingly relaxed young boy taking centre stage in the foreground. By including the mountains in the far distance, the photographer succeeds in illustrating the extent of the flat plain on which the city of Aphrodisias was constructed, while also revealing the devastation it had suffered over the years. In his title label, Girault de Prangey emphasises the presence of the figure.

There are no other similar images from Aphrodisias in the photographer's archive.
