Lot Essay

A clear view of a large villa, the window bays stepping back gracefully from the shores of the Bosphorus in the distance. The Pera, or Galata, was on the north side of the Bosphorus, opposite the city of Constantinople on the south side. Situated on a hill it enjoys a beautiful view and gentle steps take the visitor beyond Pera on to the shore, where this villa stands. It is no surprise that Girault de Prangey would have recorded views from Pera, as it was an elegant district in the 19th century, known to house foreigners. In the last quarter of the century many European photographers would open studios in the Grande rue.

This is one of several small format views in the archive taken along the banks of the Bosphorus. It is the only one of this subject.
