Lot Essay
A fine detail of a noble sculpture of one of the 12th Dynasty Egyptian kings. The capital of the Old Kingdom, Memphis was founded circa 3000 BC, and located at the junction of Upper and Lower Egypt, previously two separate kingdoms. Just south of the Nile Delta, it is the burial site of the kings of the early dynasties and the location of the famous pyramids. Amenemhet I, the father of Sesostris I moved the capital back to this area early in the 12th Dynasty (19th and 20th centuries BC).
The photographer uses the available sunlight to cast deep shadows behind the sculpture and to reveal the detail of this proud profile. There are only three photographs from Memphis in the photographer's archive, one of which, in a smaller format is similar to this study.
