259. Karnac. Obélisque.

A fine detail showing a scene of a Goddess embracing the Pharaoh, Tuthmosis III on one side, with hieroglyphics below and high relief lotus flowers on another face. This monumental base from an obelisk from the Great Temple at Karnak stands defiantly in front of the tumbling stones of the temple behind. A very similar piece, possibly identical, was illustrated in the Déscription de l'Egypte. The same obelisk also appears in photographs by Félix Teynard, Maxime Du Camp and more recently, Richard Pare.

This is the only daguerreotype of this subject in the photographer's archive.
