Lot Essay

The columns of the temples at Edfu and Arment, both photographed by Girault de Prangey, were decorated with similar capitals in a variety of patterns, united visually by rows of vertical lines and horizontal banding at the neck of the columns. The top image may show examples from one of these locations. Unlike most of the other twin images on a single plate, these two share the same orientation, suggesting that they may always have been intended to be viewed together, without cutting the plate.
