FINE RED BURGUNDY FROM NICOLAS POTEL
Nicolas Potel was brought up in Burgundy at the cutting edge of "new generation" fine wine-making. His father, Gérard, had made his first vintage at Volnay's Domaine de la Posse d'Or in 1964. Thereafter, Gérard consistently turned out elegant, perfumed, supple red wines of great beauty, albeit of lighter structure than some consumers then expected
When Gérard Potel died prematurely, Nicolas lost no time in setting up his own dynamic, wine-making négociant business, in 1997. His family's friends throughout the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune helped him source fine cuvées from Day 1. This offering allows buyers to cherry-pick many of the greatest appellations he handled, from his 2nd, 3rd and 4th vintages.
When buying from this range, I would select the 1999s for mid- and long-term keeping. Most have closed up since bottling, which is a perfectly natural development. It would be a shame to try and enjoy these wines while they are passing through adolescence.
The 1998s were greeted with dismay by some commentators, due to their tannin content. Today, many of Nicolas Potel's 1998s are softening attractively. This must be partly thanks to the inherited, family skill of crafting supple, elegant cuvées.
The 2000 vintage is proving delicious while youthful, and can be served already, for its luscious, open, harmonius fruitiness. Give these 2000 wines 30-60 minutes in the decanter, would be my advice.
