Lot Essay

The present work was cast from 1918 to 1921 in an edition size of ten. According to Leah Rosenblatt, due to the similarities between the design of The Leaf and that of the life-size Thread of Life from 1916, the present design is often mistakenly referred to as Thread of Life, which is a unique cast. Both works depict a nude with arm extended in an elegantly refined pose. The figure in Thread of Life holds a piece of thread which extends to a spindle at her left foot.

This design will be included in Leah Rosenblatt's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Harriet Whitney Frishmuth.
