Lot Essay

Knight of Malta was built for Cassar Co. Ltd. of Valetta by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Newcastle in 1929. Cassar's only vessel, she was registered in Malta (under British colours) at 1,553 tons gross (656 net) and she measured 260½ feet in length with a 37 foot beam. Engined by her builders, she could steam at 15 knots and carried limited accommodation for 100 passengers. Intended for service in and around the Mediterranean, she was relegated to cargo only after the outbreak of the Second World War and was sunk by enemy action in her home waters in March 1941.
