Lot Essay

Born in the Hague in 1675, Johann van der Hagen is said to have come to London around the end of the 17th Century. He was greatly influenced by Willem van de Velde the Younger, and the two families were linked by the marriage of Johann's daughter Barnarda to van de Velde's son Cornelis.
