Lot Essay

The sketch of Mujer peinando a su amante is very similar in composition to the finished painting of the same title, one of the most important pieces of Bermúdez oeuvre.
The drawing is depicted with loose lines defining the figures, and with watery layers of gouache that create a relaxed sketch with a sense of immediacy in the design. One of the most beautiful details of this piece is the tenderness of the couple: the female figure softly holds her companion's head with one hand while simultaneously combing his hair with the other. The male sitter, in turn, leans his head on her hand demonstrating mutual affection.
