Lot Essay

Traditionally linked with the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, Andean icons of the Archangel Gabriel typically show the messenger carrying a stalk of lilies. In this case, Gabriel points to the white dove, emblem of the Holy Spirit who will infuse Mary with the incarnate Christ.
This fine work derives from an archetype created by Bolivia's outstanding Master of Calamarca, whose identity remains unknown. There is no overpainting in the work, and despite slight losses in the floral border, the image is superbly intact. The series of angels in the Iglesia de Calamarca which date from 1660-1680 were an important source of many early eighteenth-century Altiplano masters.
