Lot Essay

Born in Pizen, Czechoslovakia in 1904, Jaroslav Brozik was a painter, print-maker and art teacher. He widely exhibited his work in the mid-West, primarily in Illinois, Iowa and Michigan, and won numerous awards. Working Freedom is a dynamic depiction of industrial America as throngs of workers approach their factory from all directions. Brozik captures the varied activities of ordinary Americans on their way to work in vignettes scattered throughout the scene from a milkman leading his horse-drawn milk along his delivery route to a couple embracing in the foreground.
