Lot Essay

Foaled in 1830, Glaucus, a bay colt by Partisan out of Nanine, was bred by General Grosvenor. His fifteen victories included the Gold Cup and the Eclipse Foot run on the same day at Ascot in 1834. He was a successful stallion whose offspring included the 1845 classic-winning fillies Pic-Nic (1,000 Guineas) and Refraction (The Oaks).

For Herring and other artists of the time, the selling of prints after their work was a very important source of income. Thus one rarely sees more detailed and exquisite work than when a picture was painted specifically for engraving. The present picture and the following lot are particularly fine examples having been executed for S. & J. Fuller's Sporting Gallery, of Rathbone Place, London. The Times of 19 May 1858 recorded: 'Messrs Foster are directed by Messrs Fuller to sell by auction at the Gallery, 54 Pall Mall, tomorrow May 20, about 80 portraits of celebrated racers and sires ... painted from life, principally by Mr Herring Sen, expressly for Messrs Fuller and from which they have published their well known series of engravings...'.
