Lot Essay

Amon Carter (1879-1955) was a Texan businessman who tirelessly promoted Texas and Fort Worth on the national stage. Carter was a newspaper man and first President of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, but also started the first radio station in Fort Worth, had interests in oil and was a founding member of American Airlines.

"The West begins in Fort Worth" is a slogan popularized by Amon Carter who proudly inscribed this presentation buckle "West Texas". Carter presented this buckle was to the President only days before FDR's controversial announcement on February 5, 1937, that he planned to add six judges to the Supreme Court to ensure passage of his New Deal package.

A great philanthropist, Carter is today remembered by the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth which showcases his collection of Remington bronzes and Western Art.
