Lot Essay

H. R. H. The Princess Augusta Sophia was the second daughter of King George III and Queen Charlotte. She died officially unmarried but is said to have secretly married Sir Brent Spencer about 1812.
An almost identical rectangular waist-length miniature of the sitter by Sir William Charles Ross, signed and dated 1839 was sold from the collection of Dr Leo Catzenstein, Christie's, London, 6 November 2001, lot 259.
