Attributed to the Marathon Painter
Circa 520-510 B.C.
Depicting the struggle for the tripod between Herakles and Apollo, the hero wearing his lionskin, moving left but looking back over his shoulder, wielding his club in his left hand and carrying the tripod in his right, Apollo wearing a short belted chiton, a quiver over his shoulder, striding forward with his left hand grasping the tripod and his right gesturing towards Herakles, Athena standing to the left, draped in a chiton and himation, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet and carrying a spear, Artemis similarly-draped standing to the right carrying a spear, some details in added red; vines in the field, horizontal bands below the scene, a net-pattern above, seven palmettes with dots between them on the shoulders below a band of vertical lines, a checker pattern on the neck, rays above the foot
