AN ATTIC RED-FIGURED NOLAN AMPHORA
Attributed to the Tithonos Painter
Circa 460 B.C.
One side with a javelin-thrower, holding his javelin at the thong, in added red, and resting it in the crook of his bent right arm, walking to the right but looking back, his torso depicted frontally, his left arm outstretched, a laurel wreath in his hair in added red, standing on a short groundline beginning as meander on the left and becoming key just after an error in the meander pattern; the other side with Nike alighting toward the right while looking back, wearing a short himation with swallow-tail folds hanging behind, her chiton with thin pleats rendered in dilute glaze at the top, dots along the skirt of the chiton, with scrolling along the hem, a diadem in her hair, holding a fillet in added red above a thymiaterion, above a short groundline of key becoming meander
