A ROMAN MARBLE PORTRAIT HEAD OF AN OLD MAN
Late Republican, Circa Mid 1st Century B.C.
Depicted with close-cropped hair rendered by short curving locks, with a receding M-shaped hairline, his forehead creased, his knit brows creating vertical creases above the nose, the small eyes with heavy upper lids and crow's feet at the corners, with deep naso-labial folds framing the mouth, echoed by deep folds in the cheeks and along the jawline, in particular on the proper left side, the thin-lipped unsmiling mouth downturned at the corners; mounted on a later 18th-19th century cuirassed bust with a facing female head in relief, wearing a paludamentum pinned on the left shoulder
