A ROMAN MARBLE FIGURE OF VENUS
Circa 2nd Century A.D.
The goddess of love depicted in the pose of the so-called "Aphrodite Anadyomene," once knotting her hair atop her head, nude but for her mantle which is tightly tied low on her hips, revealing the upper portion of her pubic triangle and buttocks, standing with her weight on her right leg, her left leg bent at the knee, her drapery falling in thick folds between her legs and splaying out just above her feet, bending forward slightly creating a crease across her navel, a dolphin to her right serving as the support, its head down and its tail raised, a mostly-lost figure of Eros once standing above, together on an oval integral base
