Lot Essay

Keith Bell comments, 'A half-length portrait of the sitter writing a letter beside a brick fireplace. A framed portrait of a woman appears on a shelf in the corner of the room behind her. Phyllis Grant was the wife of Arthur Grant of Heronsgate, Bourne End, Bucks., and the sister-in-law of Lady Slesser. The portrait was painted in the Slessers' house, Cornerways, at Bourne End, where the fireplace and curved shelf still exist. Spencer almost certainly painted the picture while he was staying at Cornerways, circa 1920' (see K. Bell, loc. cit).
