Lot Essay

Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle was educated at Eton and Kings College, Cambridge. He succeeded to the Earldom in 1758. A prominent statesman, he was a friend of Charles James Fox and held a number of important positions and roles including, President of the Board of Trade in 1779, Viceroy of Ireland in 1780 and Lord Privy Seal in 1783. He was appointed a Knight of the Garter in 1793. He was also an author and his tradegy, The Father's Revenge of 1783 was praised by Horace Walpole.
