OTTENS, Reinier (d. 1750) and Josua (d. 1765). Atlas Minor sive Geographia Compendiosa in qua Orbis Terrarum. Amsterdam: [c.1740].

2° (530 x 330mm). Hand-coloured engraved frontispiece, letterpress title in Latin and French, printed in red and black, 111 hand-coloured engraved maps, most double-page, several folding, 6 engraved tables and one 'ship' plate. (Some discolouration and offsetting throughout, several maps with archival strengthening of versos, a few with small areas restored.) Modern speckled calf by Middleton, panelled in gilt. Provenance: Johannes Carolus de Wet (18th-century signature on frontispiece and title).

The 'composite' atlases by the Ottens brothers form some of the finest Dutch atlas productions of the 18th-century. This example in a single volume includes maps by Jaillot, Fricx, de Wit, Schenk, Valk, a copy of Halley's famous world map with magnetic variations, and a fine series of Japanese maps from Kaempfer's work of 1727. Cf. Koeman III, p.86.
