Lot Essay

Another version of this composition is in the collection of the Huntingdon Library, California, see R. Wark, Drawings by Thomas Rowlandson in the Huntingdon Collection, San Marino, 1975, p. 64, no. 142, dated 1806 and formerly in the collection of Gilbert Davis.

It has not been possibly to identify the kitchen depicted, but the detailed depiction of the interior suggests that the room was based on a specific country house kitchen. Rowlandson excelled in such details and executed some of his best work delighting over these details, for example his depiction of the interior of an ale house on the Isle of Wight, see Pictures and Watercolours from Longleat; Christie's, London, 14 June 2002, lot 542.
