Lot Essay

The title of the present drawing is taken from 'Isaiah', chapter IX, verse 2, 'The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined'. A second smaller red chalk drawing of the same subject was sold Sotheby's, London, 12 March 1997, lot 199, (sold £1700).
