Lot Essay

This is a watercolour version of The Women of Sorrento drawing in the Boats (offered Christie's, London, 28 November 2001, lot 8). Sorrento is situated on the north side of the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Gulf of Naples. The picture has an almost biblical resonance, though the composition ensures that the true subject remains mysterious.
