Two George III silver candlesticks
One, mark of Louisa Courtauld and George Cowles, London, 1769, the other, mark of Louisa Courtauld and Samuel Courtauld II, London, date letter rubbed
Of similar form, each baluster shaped, cast and chased on shaped hexafoil base with shell, acanthus and gadrooned borders, the spool-shaped sockets with detachable conforming hexafoil nozzles, the base and nozzle engraved with two crests, marked on base and one nozzle, the other nozzle fixed, partly fitted for electricity
10½in. (27cm.) high
gross 49oz. (1,529gr.)
The crests are those of Mildmay and St. John, probably for Sir Henry Paulett St. John 3rd Bt. (1764-1808), whom married Jane, daughter and co-heir of Carew Mildmay, in 1786. Sir Henry assumed the additional surname of Mildmay and the arms and crest by Royal License in 1790. (2)
