Lot Essay

Ferdinand Bury, maître in 1774.

This elegant bureau is virtually identical to two others stamped by Bury, both with distinctive ormolu-bound roundels to the sides which may have been characteristic for Bury's oeuvre. One was sold anonymously at Christie's New York, 15 October 1988, lot 116, while the other - closest example - was sold at Christie's New York, 21 May 2003, lot 320. This motif also appears on a group of cylinder-bureau by Bury, which includes a bureau from the collection of Prince Anatole Demidoff and subsequently from the collection of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild, which was sold by Baron Guy de Rothschild, Sotheby's Monaco, 3 November 1994, lot 80.
