Lot Essay

Robertson painted historical and Shakespearian genre, exhibiting at both the Royal Academy and Suffolk Street. His evocations of the past are shamelessly romantic, the protagonists set in dreamy fairy tale landscapes. His ambitious Greco-Roman subject The Oracle sold at Christie's, New York, 15 February 1995, lot 294 (£19,108).
