POLANCO, Juan Alfonso (1516-1577). Breve directorium ad confessarii ac confitentis munus rite obeundum concinnatum. Rome: Antonio Blado, 1554. Small 8° (138 x 99mm). Collation: A-L8 M4 +4. Woodcut sacred monogram on title, one historiated woodcut initial. (Last two leaves adhering together, light dampstaining to title and a few other leaves.) Modern cloth. Provenance: two early ownership inscriptions for monastic institutions dedicated to St.Romualdo and St.Jerome.
RARE FIRST EDITION PUBLISHED IN THE SAME YEAR AT LOUVAIN. Collected by Polanco, Ignatius Loyola's secretary and one of the earliest members of the Jesuit order, these instructions for confessors and penitents were published not only for the Society, but for the public at large. Antonio Blado printed this work in an Italic type based on Arrighi's cancelleresca cursiva. With a four-leaf quire of indices and errata, not called for by Sommervogel. Not listed in BMC.
