TIFFANY STUDIOS, CIRCA 1901

Tiffany enamels usually bear the mark EG or SG. Although no documents exist to identify the mark EG, it is likely that SG stands for "Stourbridge Glass Co.," the name coined by Tiffany to denote one of Tiffany's two main glass-making companies (the other was the Allied Arts Company), which were merged upon the firm's consolidation under the name of Tiffany Studios in 1900. In about 1898, Tiffany established an enameling department to complement the firm's new metalwork facilities; the department appears to have closed around 1910 and reopened in 1920 when Tiffany Furnaces introduced and manufactured a novel line of enamelware that included desk set items.

This vase was acquired by the museum in 1966 with funds from the Joseph H. Heil Fund.
