AN UNUSUAL GRISAILLE AND GILT 'HUNTING' PLATE
CIRCA 1780
Decorated at the centre en grisaille with two figures on horseback galloping beside the hounds, one brandishing a long whip, in the distance two further mounted huntsmen gallop in the same direction, a band of interlinked grisaille and gilt acanthus leaves, berries, flower-heads and strapwork at the border
8 7/8 in. (22.7 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The scene on this plate is 'In Full Chase' after James Seymour, and may have been copying an engraving by J. Roberts, published in about 1780. See Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol. I, p. 283, fig. 280c for the engraving.
