Lot Essay

See the pattipan with this design, illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 238, fig. 10.1, where the authors comment that Clare Le Corbeiller has suggested that the pagoda-like tower, the courtyard with veranda and the mask on the front of the boat would indicate that this scene could be a view in Batavia. It is interesting to note that the same scene is used in a border cartouche on one of the armorial services for Valckenier; Adriaan Valckenier lived in Batavia from 1715 and was Governor General of the V.O.C. from 1737-1741.
